Why They Bought It & Tested It

Every holiday season, homeowners face the familiar dilemma of wanting a designer aesthetic without spending hundreds of dollars at luxury boutiques. This year, 1990s-inspired vintage velvet decor and rich jewel tones are dominating interior design feeds, prompting questions about how to get the look without breaking the bank.

To find out if affordable retail finds can genuinely mimic high-end aesthetics, popular DIY creator Do It On A Dime headed to local discount aisles. The goal was to test whether clever styling, layering techniques, and budget items could produce a sophisticated holiday home without the luxury price tag.

“This is the exact type of thing that is no stress, and what I'm going to do is put this on the chandelier.”

The hands-on evaluation began with a full shopping haul showcasing brand-new budget items, including velvet reindeer, shatterproof ornaments, and velvet bows. The reviewer then moved to practical applications, starting with a dining room chandelier. An ordinary light fixture was transformed using a greenery garland equipped with built-in battery timers, dressed up with wired red velvet ribbon.

Next, mantel styling was tested using painter’s tape to secure faux pine garlands safely without damaging paint. Thrifted dried hydrangeas, berry picks, and porcelain doves were layered in to add depth. Finally, a DIY bell hanger was assembled using gold jingle bells, floral wire, and a velvet bow, while a Christmas tree received a high-end finish via velvet bulbs and crystal bead spools.

The Drawbacks To Know Before Buying

1. Inventory availability: Because these budget items trend heavily online, specific pieces like velvet ornaments and specialty ribbons sell out almost immediately at local stores.

2. Manual effort needed: Raw items like basic pine garlands arrive looking thin and require considerable patience, shaping, and secondary accents to achieve a lush appearance.

3. DIY assembly required: Buyers must be prepared to twist floral wire, assemble bells, and tie bows by hand to replicate the polished look shown in the tutorial.
